Brief History of Pickwick Brewery,
Corsham
1805 – Foundation
Brewery founded at Pickwick by William & Robert Hulbert.
1841 – Sale Offered
The Hulberts advertised the brewery for sale (including land and buildings), but retained it for some time afterwards.
1850s – Estate Acquisition
Sir John Dickson-Poynder purchased the freehold of the brewery when acquiring part of the Hartham/Conyers Estate.
1865 – New Partnership
Thomas Hulbert entered partnership with Henry Padbury Manning to run the brewery.
1870s – New Owners
Control passed to Isaac Belcher and Samuel Hale Smith; their partnership ended in 1887.
1889 – New Brewer
Brewery run by Thomas Pearson Stevens.
1909 – Major Lease
Site leased by Wilkins Bros & Hudson Ltd (a Bradford-on-Avon brewery).
They modernised the brewery buildings.
1916–1919 – Takeover
Wilkins Bros & Hudson were absorbed by Ushers Wiltshire Brewery Ltd.
Pickwick Brewery became part of the Ushers network.
1920s – Closure
Brewing operations ceased after more than a century at Pickwick.
Post-Brewery Use
1950s: Used by E. S. Cole & Partners for storage and scrap metal.
1953: Malthouse partly demolished to allow access for large vehicles.
Late 20th century: Redeveloped as Lancefield Place – a mix of housing and small business units.
2025 Opening of the new Pickwick Brewery
